Research Areas

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
Modern machine learning techniques such as ensembl methods and deep neural network algorithms are enabling predictive models to solve tasks which were previously impossible. Project areas include the development of deep neural networks, convolutional networks, and applying custom ensembl based methods to build superior models.

Research Questions:
  • Supervised machine learning to generate predictive models to identify commercial flights which are likely to be delayed.
  • Using large house price datasets to build automated models able to assess real-estate value.
  • Predicting stock-market prices from social media information.
  • A review of supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods.
Neuroscience
Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system, the nature of consciousness, human behaviour, emotions, and memory. A neuroscientist is able to explain complicated phenomenon such as human behaviours or neurodegenerative diseases from the fundementals of the biology of the brain and the nervous system. Our instructors will guide you through the basic principles of neuroscience allowing you to embark on a research project to showcase your new understanding.

Research Questions:
  • Why has there been no cure for neurodegenerative disorders such as alzheimer's disease and what are potential options fo therapies?
  • The human brain requires a constant energy supply consuming large amounts of glucose and oxygen, what functions are taking place in the brain and why is this organ so metabolically expensive?
  • How do genes and the environment interact to shape human development, congition and personality and which of these factors are more important?
  • What are the genetic and environmental factors contributing to neurodegeneration?
Psychology
Psychology is the science of the mind, behaviour, thoughts, and feelings. What makes memories more or less accurate? How do other people effect how we think? What are the factors lead to differences in intelligence? In this course an instructor will teach you the basic principles of psycology and guide you through a research project enabling students to think deeply about the science of emotions, personality, and intelligence.

Research Questions:
  • How are people able to regulate their emotions and what are the consequences when this emotional control breaks down?
  • Is IQ a good measure of intelligence and what factors lead to differences in intelligence?
  • What are the factors that influence the reliability of human memories and how does this effect eyewitness testimonies?
  • How are our thoughts and opinions effected by the opinions of other people?

Data Science in Medicine
This program is a machine learning and artificial intelligence course specifically designed for students with an interest in the intersection of data science, machine learning, and medicine. Project areas include training machine learning models to study X-ray images, predict cardiovascular disease and stroke, and identify cancerous skin lesions. This course is open to all students including those with no prior computer science experience.

Research Questions:
  • Deep neural networks for automated detection of cancer from histology, dermatoscope, or other diagnostics.
  • Predicting cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack using patient characteristics and diagnostic measures.
  • Developing deep neural-networks for the diagnosis of COVID-19.
  • Development of methodology to increase supervised machine learning performance despite limited availability of data.
Research in Clinical Medicine
Modern clinical practice is becoming increasingly research based, and aspiring doctors are expected to contribute to clinical research to improve patient outcomes. In this course students are mentored by practicing medical students who can bring their experiences of interacting with patients on the hospital wards to guide students in medical research. Project areas include writing editorial letters, literature reviews, and medical data analysis.

Research Questions:
  • Critical reviews of published medical research and clinical guidelines.
  • The National Health Service: in what ways can government mandated healthcare improve patient outcomes?
Stand Out from the Crowd
Colleges receive thousands of applications, in this context it is critical for hopeful students to stand out from the crowd. It is very exceptional for a high-school student to apply having completed a research project.
Proof of Success
How can a student showcase their determination and passion for their area of study? A research project creates context by which a student can showcase their ability to succeed.
Letters of Recommendation
If students on our program excel in their work and impress their mentor they can request a letter of reccomendation for college applications, summer school placements or internships.
Career Development
Our program is tailored to inspire students, build their confidence and provide advice and training. Students who attend our course often go on to attend further summer schools, internships and develop a career in their chosen field.
Publications and Conferences
In the past, exceptional students have also been able to publish their work at conferences, student journals or submit to essay competitions.
Certificate of Completion
Students on our course are awarded with a final grade with feedback on their work as assesed by an experienced mentor. Students who pass the course are also awarded with a certificate of completion.
