Parsa co-founded an online technology platform allowing the open source online generation of content by users which was sold in 2013. Parsa contributes to Downing Enterprise with his strong links to the entrepreneurial community in Cambridge including as a former president of the Cambridge Data Society, connection to the Judge Business School via the Accelerate programme.
Dr. Amir Reza Akbari
Dr. Reza Akbari received his medical degree from the University of Manchester and currently practices medicine at the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Kingsmill Hospital in the United Kingdom. Dr Reza Akbari has a special interest in medical research have published seventeen academic papers in the past two years and has presented at numerous regional and international conferences.

Dr Reza Akbari's research is focused on analytical and medical reviews of clinical practice to enable reccomendation to improve patient care including studies on the use of antibiotic therapy in the treatment of acute uncomplicated appendicitis, risk factors in the development of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease following nonemergent cardiac surgery, and the effect of Vitamin K2 supplementation in Calcium related disorders.
Stand Out from the Crowd
Colleges receive thousands of applications, in this context it is critical for hopeful students to stand out from the crowd. It is very exceptional for a high-school student to apply having completed a research project.
Proof of Success
How can a student showcase their determination and passion for their area of study? A research project creates context by which a student can showcase their ability to succeed.
Letters of Recommendation
If students on our program excel in their work and impress their mentor they can request a letter of reccomendation for college applications, summer school placements or internships.
Career Development
Our program is tailored to inspire students, build their confidence and provide advice and training. Students who attend our course often go on to attend further summer schools, internships and develop a career in their chosen field.
Publications and Conferences
In the past, exceptional students have also been able to publish their work at conferences, student journals or submit to essay competitions.
Certificate of Completion
Students on our course are awarded with a final grade with feedback on their work as assesed by an experienced mentor. Students who pass the course are also awarded with a certificate of completion.

Research Areas

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
Modern machine learning techniques such as ensembl methods and deep neural network algorithms are enabling predictive models to solve tasks which were previously impossible. Project areas include the development of deep neural networks, convolutional networks, and applying custom ensembl based methods to build superior models.

Example Research Questions:
  • Supervised machine learning to generate predictive models to identify commercial flights which are likely to be delayed.
  • Using large house price datasets to build automated models able to assess real-estate value.
  • Predicting stock-market prices from social media information.
  • A review of supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods.

Data Science in Medicine
This program is a machine learning and artificial intelligence course specifically designed for students with an interest in the intersection of data science, machine learning, and medicine. Project areas include training machine learning models to study X-ray images, predict cardiovascular disease and stroke, and identify cancerous skin lesions. This course is open to all students including those with no prior computer science experience.

Example Research Questions:
  • Deep neural networks for automated detection of cancer from histology, dermatoscope, or other diagnostics.
  • Predicting cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack using patient characteristics and diagnostic measures.
  • Developing deep neural-networks for the diagnosis of COVID-19.
  • Development of methodology to increase supervised machine learning performance despite limited availability of data.

Neuroscience
Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system, the nature of consciousness, human behaviour, emotions, and memory. A neuroscientist is able to explain complicated phenomenon such as human behaviours or neurodegenerative diseases from the fundementals of the biology of the brain and the nervous system. Our instructors will guide you through the basic principles of neuroscience allowing you to embark on a research project to showcase your new understanding.

Example Research Questions:
  • Why has there been no cure for neurodegenerative disorders such as alzheimer's disease and what are potential options for therapies?
  • The human brain requires a constant energy supply consuming large amounts of glucose and oxygen, what functions are taking place in the brain and why is this organ so metabolically expensive?
  • How do genes and the environment interact to shape human development, congition and personality and which of these factors are more important?
  • What are the genetic and environmental factors contributing to neurodegeneration?

Psychology
Psychology is the science of the mind, behaviour, thoughts, and feelings. What makes memories more or less accurate? How do other people effect how we think? What are the factors lead to differences in intelligence? In this course an instructor will teach you the basic principles of psycology and guide you through a research project enabling students to think deeply about the science of emotions, personality, and intelligence.

Example Research Questions:
  • How are people able to regulate their emotions and what are the consequences when this emotional control breaks down?
  • Is IQ a good measure of intelligence and what factors lead to differences in intelligence?
  • What are the factors that influence the reliability of human memories and how does this effect eyewitness testimonies?
  • How are our thoughts and opinions effected by the opinions of other people?

Genetic Engineering and CRISPR
What is the basis for human life? The genome encodes over 20,000 human genes which are transcribes and translated to proteins which form the fundemental basis of all living organisms. Modulation and modification of the genome has enabled spectacular scientific experiments and incredible advances in food technology and medicine. The future of genetic engineering is likely to involve even more detailed and granular modification enabled by CRISPR technology.

Example Research Questions:
  • What are the methods for genetic engineering and what are the major challenges?
  • Will gene-drives enable the eradication of malaria and what are the potential risks?
  • Is it possible to use genetic engineering to eradcate inherited disease and is this morally acceptable?

Research in Clinical Medicine
Modern clinical practice is becoming increasingly research based, and aspiring doctors are expected to contribute to clinical research to improve patient outcomes. In this course students are mentored by practicing medical students who can bring their experiences of interacting with patients on the hospital wards to guide students in medical research. Project areas include writing editorial letters, literature reviews, and medical data analysis.

Example Research Questions:
  • Critical reviews of published medical research and clinical guidelines.
  • The National Health Service: in what ways can government mandated healthcare improve patient outcomes?
